Integrating species life-history traits and patterns of deforestation in amphibian conservation planning

چکیده
Deforestation does not progress randomly throughout landscapes (Viana et al., 1997; Ezard & Travis, 2006; Silva et al., 2007) because of the non-random spatial distribution of land suitable for specific human activities and laws that often protect particular habitats or vegetation types. Riparian vegetation, for example, is protected by law in many countries (Gregory et al., 1991). Thus, if enforcement is effective, deforestation should be biased to areas other than riparian zones. In contrast, humans tend to concentrate their activities in valleys where water is readily available for agriculture, industry and human consumption, resulting in deforestation and disconnection of riparian zones from upland vegetation Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA, Departamento de Ecologia, ICB, Universidade Federal de Goiás, Goiânia GO 74001-970, Brazil, Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, Rio Claro, SP 13506-900, Brazil

Distribution patterns of Convolvulaceae in Iran: priorities for conservation
Assessing priorities is the most important action in conservation programs. Rudimentary, mapping of diversity, and distribution patterns have been used to set priorities on diverse scales. The distribution patterns of plant taxa, largely reflect an actual ecological niche. Convolvulaceae s.str exhibits cosmopolitan dispersal of diverse life forms and includes 50–60 genera comprising 1600–1700 s...
متن کاملA database of life-history traits of European amphibians
In the current context of climate change and landscape fragmentation, efficient conservation strategies require the explicit consideration of life history traits. This is particularly true for amphibians, which are highly threatened worldwide, composed by more than 7400 species, which is constitute one of the most species-rich vertebrate groups. The collection of information on life history tra...
متن کاملAmphibian species traits, evolutionary history and environment predict Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis infection patterns, but not extinction risk
The fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (B. dendrobatidis) has emerged as a major agent of amphibian extinction, requiring conservation intervention for many susceptible species. Identifying susceptible species is challenging, but many aspects of species biology are predicted to influence the evolution of host resistance, tolerance, or avoidance strategies towards disease. In turn, w...
متن کاملUrban expansion as a driver of biodiversity loss: Integrating biodiversity in urban planning in African context
Africa has high biodiversity and is rapidly urbanizing. However, there is limited understanding of how urban expansion in Africa is likely to affect its habitats and biodiversity. Little urban ecological research has been done in Africa. This study needs to think ahead as Africa move into the “urban age” it is critical to inform the public on the importance of urban environment...
متن کاملResearch Article: Life history traits of ribbonfish Trichiurus lepturus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea
Ribbonfish, Trichiurus lepturus (Linnaeus, 1758), is an important component of subsistence fisheries throughout its tropical and subtropical distribution. The catch rate of ribbonfish has increased seven-fold in a decade in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. We collected monthly biological samples from T. lepturus, to estimate growth and mortality parameters, and identify species reproductive patte...
